while the gobekli tepe astronomical site assumption do get some traction, it was mostly rejected nowadays from the fact that the site has lot of animal feast remains, roofing, and human settlement has been discovered.

i think most recent theory is that gobekli tepe was some sort of seasonal social hub when there were excess of bounty, the nomadic or early agricultural people will gather to share goods and idea. hence semi permanent settlement nature, inconsistent usage, and abandon then rebuild period of the site.
