while the gobekli tepe observatory site theory did get some traction back when it was proposed, it is rejected nowadays from the fact that the site has lot of animal feast remains, roofing, and human settlement and burial has been discovered recently. observatory site tend to far away from settlement, and has open roofing to you know, observe the sky.

i think most recent theory is that gobekli tepe was some sort of seasonal social hub when there were excess of bounty, the nomadic or early agricultural people will gather to share goods and idea. hence semi permanent settlement nature, inconsistent usage, and abandon then rebuild period of the site.
