I can't read Japanese, but is there a chance the bigger dog was saying If they keep talking, I'd be lonely" rather than if they stop talking? It would make a bit more sense the girl talking more would mean she pays less attention to her dog, which would match it's sad look. Plus it plays against the little dog wanting them to keep talking. Keeps up with all the opposites of the story.
