Huh. I’ll admit I didn’t know that, but also I’ll pass on playing Diablo thank you. My perspective perhaps comes from a place of ignorance, that I’ll grant, but that ignorance is founded upon the question of, genuinely, what is the constraint which prevents a top level player from simply having gear ready for every situation? MRes for fighting casters, Def for Phys Dealers, APen for tanks, et cetera.
It turns what should be, in my eyes, a test of skill and build design - Designing a character build, equipping them to synergize with that build, and then executing upon the plan you constructed earlier - into a batmanesque game of preparation where you’re trying to figure out the figurative silver bullet to your opponent, and them to you. Ironically, in a way, I could also argue that that reduces the value of the gear itself, as it now needs be homogenized in a way that isn’t disruptive to an endgame build if you swap it out with another piece.
