I'm pretty sure that that whole discussion of Echida's actual goal being to hide the existence of Melancholy wasn't in the anime. There's no real translation of the novels, but it seems more likely that it was something adapted out of the anime than something adapted into the manga, right? It feels pretty important, though, so it seems strange that the anime would have just skipped it over like that...

It wouldn't be the first time they've cut out important lore.

Guess that's how anime adaptations usually go. Would be nice if there were actual translations of the novels to confirm this, though. All I can find are heavily compressed summaries, which are absolutely cutting out important information.
