Im going to spoil so hard... Ive reached chapter 120 in the novel. And just giving my thoughts on why the story is becoming stale because of overdone revenge.
If youre reading this story for the wholesomeness, i advise you to stop right when tribulation strikes the eastern palace.
If there someone who read pass 120, please spoil me and tell me if it does change or not.
The story is becoming a sadistic fetish on the suffering of people who deserve some suffering. But I feel it is over done and Shihuan is showing a very stubborn attitude of not letting go that revenge even though shes kinda have reached a happy ending.
The mother and Yixun.
They are females so they do invoke pity more effectively than the father and brothers. But the story depicts the mother too pitifully. From the start, she has had some wavering towards Shihuan when shes being highlighted as "still a mother". But i do still think she deserve retribution from her stupidity.
Honestly, i could have hated the mother if she were written like in the usual cliche of either "shes bad" or "shes good but weak". No, the writing of the mother is what made me anticipate the moment when Shihuan would let go of her revenge because of the mother's change. Even if she still doesnt accept her as the mother, she would at least consider her as just another person and not "YOU PAIN IS MY SOURCE OF MY BEATING HEART!" when she already got what she always wanted. A family with Song Yu.
Usually in revenge genre, theres always the "revenge is a dead end" and i actually have always been one to think "fuck you mean? they kill the person they hate and so their grudge will be relieved". But here it not the usual revenge either. Its prolonged torment and became the focus of the story when one of the reason im reading this is to read the wholesomeness between Shihuan and the people around her not a mother spiritually dying from self repentance or a stupid naive Yixun whos being clowned, tricked into self poisoning and breaking her ankle.
