There's actually an interesting translation error I made in this chapter. It talks about “vicariously experiencing the pain of apoptosis over and over” but it should be “relive the pain of apoptosis over and over”. Yes, it can mean “vicarious” as in feeling someone else's pain through seeing him do something which is how I had originally learned the word, but it can just as easily mean feeling pain again through viewing one's own memories, in which case “relive” is the more appropriate translation.
Interesting how these mistakes happen. Not even any monolingual dictionary I checked lists the latter meaning, which in my experience might actually be more common than the former. Though probably because it's just a special case of the former. It just so happens that English has a special word for vicariously experiencing emotions through one's own memories, “relive”.
