I remember in a similar story where there was a bet on a mine and something else of supposed equal value.
spoiler as I can't be sure it's not going to end up like as I remember in that story I remember.

The mine was running dry but that wasn't public knowledge
The ones owning the mine were confident of their victory
They also delayed transferring the mine after the bet and ruined by spilling toxic crap into it.
Shamelessly betting a toxic pit against something of great value in a challenge where they should have had a 99% win chance.

But the resolving of this bet can easily take 7 more chapters.
