Maybe im not getting the whole picture but if the rumor is true about Hugo changing is because something happened to his Family. This would be tragic af. Since he liked birchir as a son. Hed be ok being killed by him therefore birchir would not be satisfied by his "revenge".

Maybe this is just my point of view as i havent read the probable inspiration for Hound of Baskerville. So yeah
