It was built up to him saying "no" and just generally rejecting his target of affection because of the shoujo manga. It was almost expected for him to say no to her question whether he liked her or not.

@spons I feel like that was done to purpose to highlight that he is not one to be tricked easily intro hiding his feelings for her. Overall he is as straight-forwards as it gets and generally hides nothing.
