I came back to check why I dropped it, because my memory failed. This chapter reminded me. All the rational science is window dressing, and the supposed core topic keeps relying on disproven evopsych generalizations. The falsehoods wouldn't bother me so much if they weren't framed as if they were solid science.
The modern understanding of sex and gender based psychological factors are fascinating and deep, yet this story stagnates in generalizations based on faulty mid-1900s understandings of evolutionary psychology flawed by biases from that modern milieu. The simplistic pop sci explanations and myths are contradicted by the wide array of tribal cultures, archeological sites, and hominid fossils. If you're taking it too seriously it's both misandrist and misogynist, a grand achievment.
This orphan comment on a plain chapter midway in a series isn't going to be read by anyone, but it makes me feel a bit better.
