damn, that's true as heck. I'm a scientist myself, and this pictured here is super common. students not being able to answer the simple question that boils down to "why even do this in the first place" happens every time

On the other hand, the way this is handled by the professors in this chapter is idiotic.
A presenter should be allowed to state, that they do not know an answer to question that is not strictly related to their talk.
Even an expert will not know everything. More, they are likely to be focused on a particular area instead. 5 seconds at
(Widely regarded expert and author of books on C++).
They invalidated student's genuine research work at the title/intro slide, and clearly took pride and satisfaction in that. Unlike constructive criticism, this helps no one. The student should be encouraged to research other methods/topics as well, maybe even compare their usefulness, efficiency and so on. As long as his research is not false (like healing stones/aura), it conveys some value.

In my work, as a programmer, I sometimes give presentations on my projects. When I am asked by coworkers about some related solution/technology, I am allowed (and expected to) say I did not look into it, if that's the case. No one ever had any issue with that.

This is even worse, when connected with a strict seniority hierarchy of Asian cultures, which here prevents anyone for standing up for the student.
That makes such attitude not only idiotic, but actually harmful and dangerous. A stellar example can be Korean Air Cargo flight 8509 (at 26:20):
In short, airplane's first officer was strongly berated by the more senior captain (both Korean) before take off, for no actual reason, and when captain's instruments have failed, he started to dive the airplane straight into the ground. The first officer - which could clearly see what is happening - did not say anything, as he was effectively silenced by the captain.

Summarizing: This kind of attitude, as presented by professors, should have no place in any environment - be it professional, academic or even in everyday life. It is just a form of ego-boosting, at the expense of others.
