wonder what makes it 'fake' to that coworker, if anything i'd think music aimed at teens other than some cheesy lyrics a younger person might've never heard before and be moved easily, would be 'authentic' b/c snarky teens would be able to see thru bs as opposed to them only doing music to make money like an idol group of 'pretty boys'
The issue of authenticity in music is an issue with how the music industry operates as it manufactures and appropriates a culture to then repackage it into a commercial product to give it mass appeal, but in that process it sanitizes, and eliminates the particular elements that made said culture special
This can be more easily seen with almost all African American music from blues, to rock, to disco, electronic music, jungle, hip-hop and rap, as they start being whitewashed and stripped of what once made them special
Teen Rock is by definition from the start music that is designed and manufactured to appeal to an specific demographic, and as thus will always follow corporate interests rather than the free spirit of rebellion that used to guide rock music before it became pop music
As thus all Teen Rock music, just like all popular music, being it western pop, K-pop, J-pop, etc, are fake music genres, for they are the product of capital interests, instead of artistic drive
Now you may say "but what about indie pop bands? Wouldn't they exist as examples of artistic drive?", the issue here is that the culture of indie pop bands, is at the end of the day still tied and rooted to the culture of corporate media, there's no subculture or independent culture that would allow them to persist outside the idea of wide mass appeal for consumption, which is why pop music is not seen as a genre in itself, but more of a qualification their sounds always preying on others for whatever fits the times
If folk music takes off, K-pop will switch hip hop beats for wooden flutes, not because the artist will it, but because the marketing analysis demands it
This leads to the following problem, does fake and manufactured = bad? And is authenticity = good?
Not necessarily, but the issue of appealing to everyone means eventually making something for nobody, and in doing so killing an entire sound
