This was a cute story, but I kept asking myself while reading it, "couldn't they just adopt? or use a sperm donor?" So I googled it after reading, and apparently Japan is really dumb when it comes to gay families. Like, they explicitly block gay couples from adopting, and many doctors won't give sperm donations to lesbian couples. Granted a lesbian could fly to the US or Europe to get inseminated, but in that scenario there would be no way to make her partner the child's legal guardian. There seems to have been a recent ruling in Osaka that gay couples can raise foster kids, so that's something at least, but overall Japan just seems to be really slow on gay rights. The irony of this is that Japan is an aging country that desperately wants people to have more kids, and yet they refuse to let LGBT couples have them :/
