Regarding the "friendly old heroes from epics were reinterpreted into lovers": as far as I am aware, most often it was exactly the opposite. Lovers were in the first translations by the puritanical folks now "really good friends". And then later translations were more truthful to the originals. Best examples are Enkidu & Gilgamesh (although that was translated only relatively recently), Achilles & Patrocles, Alexander the Great, nearly the whole of the roman emperors...

Interestingly, biblical scholars have been arguing for a long time if the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was strictly based off homosexuality. The initial story in Genesis doesn’t single out a specific sin, with only later interpretations jumping to it being the gay sex. Hell, in Ezekiel 16:48-50 we get this:

As I live, saith the Lord God, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fulness of bread, and careless ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before Me; therefore I removed them when I saw it.

Which implies the problem with the residents of Sodom was that they were prideful and inhospitable to strangers. Adultery too. But of course good little Christians want to keep being prideful and hateful to strangers, so instead they jumped to homosexuality because it’s an easy target.

Anyway happy pride month

If you go by some of the gnostic gospels gay sex and pederasty weren't seen as sinful in the 1st and 2nd century either considering how homoerotic the main characters were potrayed as. Gnostics plagued the ranks of christianity well into the 4th century so if say the secret gospel of mark were among their top texts to go by then they clearly did not have an issue with guy love between two guys.

I can't quite put into words how fascinating it is to see a japanese author just burying himself in medieval Europe topics. I hope Yamada gets started with something new soon.

Thank you for the translation!

On the other side, huge update on Rosa's and Elder's backstories. Both interesting and delicious.
Also, Rosa's design is the best female in the whole series. Ah so hot...

The punchline was obvious from the start of the chapter, but it was still hilarious
