Review
- Ch 57, first encounter on the street.
- In Ch 58, she's seen in the rain, with the visual implication that she was watching (and maybe listening) to Maria's conversation with Jean regarding her. (She seems to far away to be listening, but even so, she would have seen Maria interact with Jean.)
- In 59, it's clear that she intentionally revealed herself to Maria. Either to bait her, or to see how Maria would react.
Possibilities
1) Plot to sabotage Maria? It seems like this person is intentionally baiting Maria. She revealed herself, but then ran away. Has the skills to not be noticed in the first place, but lets herself be seen. And has the skills to escape Maria.
2) Actually Theresa? Who somehow recognizes Maria? And wants to see her, but doesn't want to meet her? (Guilty conscience.)
How would she recognize Maria though? ... Intuition or some such nonsense. Or... Suspect it because of the way Maria is connecting with her old team. Or... recognize Maria through Maria's behavior just as other old associates have recognized Maria.
If it's Theresa, she's likely still working for her old employer.
3) An illusion spell cast by someone on Maria? Might be a spell to "see what you most fear, or what will disturb you" without the caster knowing what the actual image is. But that doesnt' fit with ch 58, where we see her when Maria does not.
Best Guess
It's Theresa, still working for her old employer. Their first encounter was by chance. Theresa escaped, but began to suspect that it was Albright because of Maria's behavior. She spies on Maria after that, witnessing (from afar) her conversation with Jean. She then intentionally reveals herself to Maria in the carriage to see how Maria will react. Maria's reaction confirms to her that Maria is Albright. But Theresa betrayed her suicide pact with Albright, so she's (correctly) massively guilty and escapes. (There's probably some extenuating circumstance to her surviving the suicide pack, e.g. being found by her employer and being given the antidote by him, then threatened again.)
Incidentally
- Maria's old memories are fading. (This is probably just normal fading with time though, rather than "new life taking over" fading.
- Maria not phased at all by two busty girls in the bath with her.
- Maria really is... not busty.
