It frustrates me a little to see how quickly Chiezou was dismissed as 'old' for being only 75. She seems utterly helpless to her daughter, but her daughter never stops to think that maybe it's because she took someone from the country and tossed them into an enormous, unfamiliar city?? Of course she'd be uncomfortable! The biggest issue seems to be that she was so consumed by her idea of what it meant to take care of someone elderly that she didn't even bother to really see her mom for who she was. Chiezou clearly isn't mentally incompetent, just a little overwhelmed and, yes, not in very good physical health. My own parents are nearing that age. If I treated them like that, they'd be furious to be so infantilized.... I hope this series can make people think twice about looking down on seniors.
I love how quickly Mariko picks up on new things on her adventures. She goes from being temporarily overwhelmed by just how many people saw two old ladies in an arcade to immediately realizing how to take advantage of it. She doesn't have to understand how exactly Twitter works to see the bigger picture. That's pretty inspiring.
As a side note... I think Mariko's cat is turning out to be the real MVP of this series. It's fine being carried around, staying in random cafés and other people's houses, doesn't scratch or make messes, keeps its complaints and yowls to a minimum... my cat could never.
