I like the idea of the guy becoming ridiculously popular being treated as a curse. It's something that a lot of people claim they want, but which I imagine would quickly become very annoying, everything considered. You'd basically never be able to just go out normally again, because there'd always be several people hitting on you. And you can't really expect any relationship after that point to be genuine, as it's not like they saw you and immediately thought "wow, what a great guy to hang out with!" Rather, "wow, what a hot guy!" would be what they thought. And that's not even counting the people that would inevitably try to force themselves on you.
