Many events in this manga pass quickly, and with minimal exposition, instead of sketching things out with broad strokes. This reminds me of the "the reader can figure it out" school of thought that some Japanese writers subscribe to: in many scenes and interactions, it's not what is said or done that is relevant, but what is unsaid or not done, but still bleeds into the text. Also, the concept of "face".
MC goes with the flow and is rarely provoked by the chasm between what his life could be like, and what it is, usually acknowledging that it exists when someone provokes him. By being "a father" or "a husband" or "a salaryman", he locks himself into the shackles of those roles and "face", experiencing freedom to be himself only when there's women and alcohol involved.
To sum it up, I'm betting that it's not for everyone, be it because of tempo and material, inability to "feel" the MC, or seeing sexist discrimination portrayed in an era where it was even more rampant than today.
