I wonder if it's because Liam's used to anyone he deems "regular (ordinary)" simply cowering before him, that Hoshino facing him down--despite her physical temerity--is what's got him spooked.
If she were truly a fraud, perhaps he figures she'd crack under the pressure of being made to "walk the talk". That she isn't, while being up-front about stuff like the fact she won't breach confidentiality--even if it'd "mean her loss" in their little game--probably is setting off alarm bells for Liam, because she's reacting entirely counter to his lived experience (at least insofar as what we've seen in the chapters he's appeared in, when dealing with anyone who wasn't Elnston or Sage).

Which, given how he seems relatively straightforward as an individual, is raising his hackles. Someone who appears weak and mild, not being that way in a manner that reads as authentic, is enough of a discordance that it'd make any individual accustomed to clear definitions of "power" second-guess their situation, I wager.

Unsure of how this'll proceed, except that I assume Hoshino will ultimately "win" and convince Liam of her ability and her utility for the Hero's Party. How that happens, and what transpires past that - well, I look forward to seeing it all play out.

Thanks for the chapters.

There it is, the the assertion that forces him to assess his own standing against her. "I am as serious if not more than you are" it implies. So good :meguupog:
Though it is funny that he's being led on with competitiveness like a grade schooler :dogkek:

I'm guessing what they're implying with Liam is that he is afraid that individually they are not stronger than the enemy. Kyle was stronger than Liam and Kyle died, but if Kyle died because his strength alone wasn't enough and Liam couldn't beat Kyle, then Liam also can't beat the enemy, so in order to cope he has to say that it was due to some other factor, someone elses weakness that Kyle died otherwise he wouldn't be able to cope with his fear that they may lose.

Hoshino is therefore trying to show him that whilst no-one individually is strong enough to win and they are all scared of losing, by combining everyone's individual efforts they can ultimately win - Liam needs to rely on others strengths even they are weaker than him.

The only way that Hoshino will lose is if Liam is a heartless/psychopatic person. But the fact that he just call her fraud without harming her nor being manipulative, means he actually have a clear mind and a very rational person. A rational person can be convinced, you just need to appeal to their logic.
