what I also find somewhat funny is that as soon as he acknowlewdged the dark he immediately made an evil face (presumably turning evil) because his brainwashing for dark=evil is so strong.

Honestly, I feel like the brother's attitude should have continued for a while longer. Not extending the tournament arc, but future interactions with him having him refusing to acknowledge the dark attribute. His arrogance preventing him from seeing the truth. Instead, it's just

"Shit, guess I'll put on my evil face then."

Mine eyes must spew mistruths.

While it is not wrong, there stark difference in comparison to the rest. That an entire different style of writing, and only for one sentence. I am not entirely sure it even appropriate in there.

Well.. that felt a smidge anticlimactic. Also we already know those "parents" are assholes, so jamming "le sad backstory" in only a few pages right at the climax of the fight felt.. forced? idk. Coulda easily spent chapters in the future going over the brother's shit childhood. Didn't feel like the right time for it is what im tryna get at

Lot of fiction makes a lightning user upgrade from regular lightning to red/purple/black lightning without any hint that another element has been mixed in, they just concentrate more magic/ki into it.

I don't think it was supposed to be a sad backstory, it was more about giving a reason for him to deny that he was a dual attribute dark magician. He also didn't necessarily have a "shit childhood", he was raised to be an elitist asswipe, but so far he seems to have had no problem accepting this role.

His reaction to this defeat might make the difference. I hope that he doesn't just go "I was beaten once, so I'm turning over a new leaf and becoming my brother's faithful follower now", but stays the elitist asswipe he was.

Right. But I also mention the property. Absorbing things, magic in particular, is typically a dark attribute in most fantasy.
