They gave Lyle more agency to make him a more endearing protagonist, when he wa supposed to be almost a walking corpse and just follow what Novem tells him.

Which is actually really important cause having no personality, ambition, or desire is important for Lyle character, it also makes Novem less creepy, which is also important
