I kind of doubt, since it took me all of ten seconds of searching to find another murder-tanuki story https://mythfolklore.blogspot.com/2014/05/japanese-fairy-tales-how-wicked-tanuki.html

It would seem more likely that you just haven't heard the other murder-tanuki stories (and that they went out of fashion, like how most of the Grimm tales and many other western folktales have gotten a lot milder over the years)
