The use of “quilt” to refer to a comforter is not wrong, but typically the word “quilt” refers to a patchwork comforter; such quilting originated as a way to recycle cloth from trimming, worn clothing, &c.

That must be regional because we never use term “comforter” here and always use quilt. According to Wikipedia, quilting refers not to the patchwork but to the stitching.

In some sense, yes.
we never use term “comforter” here
Which non-use is regional.
quilting refers not to the patchwork but to the stitching.
I explained
The use of “quilt” to refer to a comforter is not wrong
That doesn't change the point that most speakers of the English language will use “quilt” to refer to a patchwork comforter.

The use of this-or-that dialect is just fine when people who use a different dialect recognize the use. But, in this case, most readers won't; so it's a good idea to look for a different word.

Double, double, toil and trouble
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Bolt of cloth and water from the well,
Phoenix feather and beetle shell,
Fragrant oil of lavender flower,
And just a drop of magic power.
Stir it all with a branch of oak,
Then snuff the flame and let it soak.
Finally, remove the cloth and hang to dry upon a line,
And a set of new enchanted bedding will be thine!
