hello chat
we're back, kinda. not really as much as you'd imagine
normally i'd have a series of chapters ready to be posted day after day after a big hiatus, but that's not the case today. this chapter is all i have. sorry chat
the hiatus was because i was very busy this summer but i should be back in my rhythm now. granted, like. don't expect too much, because i'm really not motivated to work on these chapters.

a big reason why i waited so long to start working on this again is because i believed this tea ceremony tournament arc (oops, spoilers!) would end relatively quickly, and i'd be able to speed through them even though i personally don't like them, think that they're kinda boring and have poorly set stakes, and most importantly, have boring ass research. (i like researching about pop culture and fun stuff, researching about boring traditional japanese stuff isn't the most exciting prospect to me). so i believed they'd be over quickly and i'd be able to bite my tongue and work through the pain, but it's... it just. it just doesn't end. we're at chapter 39 right now. it is STILL about tea ceremonies. not only that, there is indication that the tea ceremony arc will continue for at LEAST another 6 chapters. dear lord

i can't promise too much of a consistent release schedule now. i'll try though

if you're interested in tea ceremonies though, here's a few wikipedia links to get you started:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_tea_ceremony
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okakura_Kakuzō
other stuff you can find yourself. as mentioned above i am really not big on this entire thing, sorry

now in a different set of ideas. let me address the yamikawa shaped elephant in the room

the official parakou webseries account recently posted this comment. translated:
Riko-tya's (りこてゃ) name in English was noted down as "RikoTya" [in the thumbnail], however, the correct version would be "RikoTeya". teya → てゃ
thumbnail for reference:
hqdefault.jpg

in other words, they've effectively canonized "riko-teya" as her correct nickname.
if you've been here for a while, you would know that, a while back, i painstakingly edited all the older chapters in order to raise the quality, but also to fix my mistake of misinterpreting yamikawa's nickname as "riko-teya". after editing all chapters, i fixed all mentions of yamikawa's nickname to be "riko-tya". and, right now, they just canonized "riko-teya".

i'm going to kill these writers

in any case, respectfully: i will not change back to teya
partially because it'd be a pain in the ass to redo all the chapters AGAIN (and it would be very weird to just change it from now on), but also partially because, in my humble opinion, the writers don't know shit

i initially assumed it was teya and kinda said "ok, must be a japanese thing. guess that's how it is." eventually someone in MD comments pointed out that the ya was small (i read it as や instead of ゃ because vertical writing was still new to me when i first started scanlating this manga), which would instead make it -tya. this prompted me to research it a little more, and to think about it a little more, and, ultimately: -tya is absolutely the correct version
see, it comes from "-chan", but you soften and babify the "ch", turning it into a "t" consonant. think of it like how you'd talk to a puppy or a baby in a loving, cute tone; with softened pronunciation. this would technically make it "than", but as per hepburn it's actually "tyan". "teyan" wouldn't make much sense because that would be expanding the t sound for no reason; it'd only make sense if the original was "chean"/"cheyan" if that makes sense

as for the original web series on youtube. frankly. i don't know! it seems like each voice actor pronounces riko-tya differently. some do "riko-teya", putting emphasis on extending the "te" sound, others just say "tya". (some even actually pronounce the n at the end, even though it's supposed to be removed?) from my surface level research it seems like the original voice actors (i.e. hikaru's, masa's, the gals, yamikawa herself) pronounce it as "tya", but the newer VAs added in more recent episodes seem to pronounce it as "teya" instead. though i don't think this means anything

TL;DR: official sources have confirmed that yamikawa's nickname is "riko-teya", not "riko-tya". i respectfully believe that aforementioned official sources do not know enough about japanese to english romanization in order to properly make that judgement call; i believe they are wrong and that i am right about everything and perfect and infallible and never make any mistakes

(i hope this entire essay doesn't come off as me being super-hard-working and dedicated because in reality it's a big essay of me trying to justify why i want to be a lazy bum and not edit everything lmao /j)

props to the reddit commenter who told me of this. granted nothing changed because of their comment but still

also update to the fem hikaru induced trans proofreader situation

like 15 minutes before uploading this chapter, i was looking up the parakou yt channel to look for the riko-tya video mentioned above
but i also noticed that there are new videos centered around genderbent hikaru (video one, video two. note that due to youtube's new god awful ai dubbing the google execs are pushing, you'll have to change your youtube language to japanese in order for the audio to not be abysmal dogshit)

naturally i brought this news to my quality checker, whose egg was cracked by manga fem hikaru a few months back. ("Adino" on every credits page)

Screenshot 2025-10-06 002232.jpg

took her a grand total of 3 minutes to change her profile pic to it

for reference she very rarely changes profile pics. but this was INSTANTANEOUS. no hesitation whatsoever

tl;dr the shiretto sugee koto itteru gal manga & the parakou webseries are japanese psy-ops created with the objective to feminize the western man. and by god it is working

there's new fem hikaru content in the volume 4 extras, too. that's gonna be fun :3

Look, I’m gonna be honest - Japanese to English translation can be some of the most difficult to do. It’s why I’m more lenient when it comes to official releases having issues, because even on perfect translations some things still won’t work properly

Which is to say I totally understand, and I feel bad for whatever publisher gets to license this, because I can just imagine some people going “ummm acktually it’s Riko-tiyahh pronounced like Fox in Smash Bros 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓”

The translator's note talking about the metaphorical definition of 道 is actually kind of funny to me, because I speak Toki Pona, where the word for path / road, nasin, is very commonly used in a very similar way, ("nasin nasa" (lit. "strange path") is a very common way for speakers to refer to experimental styles of speech, for example.) and it really doesn't read as an especially special concept at all.

On the other hand, though, Toki Pona has a very limited vocabulary, (only a bit more than 120 words!) encouraging speakers to focus more on explaining concepts rather than take advantage of already existing specific utterances and to avoid going into unnecessary detail when doing so. (If there are only apples and steak on the menu, can't you just say "the fruit" to get your point across? Even if a pear is added which might necessitate "red fruit," until that pear arrives you don't really need to elaborate.)

So it's funny to read the note and think "the harder part to translate is 'tea,' actually..." Though for the record, I'd probably say "nasin pi telo kasi" ("path of plant liquid") here. "nasin telo" ("liquid path") is simpler, but it could be confused with stuff relating to water pretty easily, so it's not the best here. I'd only use it in a context where these other interpretations are less likely, such as when listing several school clubs.

Because what other sorts of "liquid paths" would have a club in a Japanese high school? Have you ever seen a River Club? An Ocean Currents Club? A Synchronized Swimming Club? They might exist, but a tea ceremony club is going to be everyone's first assumption, so it would get the simpler term here.

Though it would be funny to see a manga in Toki Pona where a guy's like "Oh, the girl I like's in the nasin telo club, so I'm going to join it to be with her!" and joins the Tea Ceremony Club only to find out she was in the Ocean Currents Club.
