well, I suppose it's not surprising he's mentally weak? He's a 14 year old that has barely had to overcome any real difficulties (sans whatever he went through before the series started in the old gods' dungeon). He's not exactly mentally strong, just strong in every other way. Hence, this is pretty much the only way he can be attacked.
