I'd say it similar to known plant poison that bind to fish gills and deprived them of oxygen, suffocating them. Remove the gills and guts as usual should be safe for consumption.

As of the more recent chapters in the web novel, she has met quite a few people that knew her when she was still Saint Iris, including some of her closer friends (not any family though. As far as I know she doesn't have any). It becomes something of a recurring theme where a character will notice how similar she looks to her old self, but as of yet only a few characters actually know the truth, and everyone else just dismisses it as a strange coincidence.

We are rapidly approaching a possible confrontation between her and her old fiancé and the other girl, though, as long as nothing happens to move the story off track.
