The whole "we didn't help" thing is always an interesting thing to think about, of course you can make a case for not being strong enough to stop someone's suffering (especially if said action will bring about suffering to yourself), but that also doesn't absolve you of effectively leaving someone to the wolves, you can also liken it to the grains analogy from A Bug's Life
