You need to read more Shojo and Josei manga. Stuff like this happens ALL THE TIME in reverse, especially when it concerns royalty characters. There are a ton of "toxic" prince/King stories where they damn near rape the women and it's still considered romantic.

anime romance is just a jumbled mess and 90% built for drama or written poorly by adding a love triangle for no reason, or the love interest is completely boring (Komi-san can't speak is a prime example of a stale and two dimensional character)

and we still call it stupid, but ironically, most or some women (not all) want that rape fantasy by the prince charming. It is odd, yes. And we still say it is dumb but it is cattering to an obvious fan-base.

I have to disagree on the "Only works because it's a guy", There are a lot of girls who likes story of a handsome bad guy acting similarly towards the female MC. If there are two male lead and a female protag, the people who would rather pick the bad boy that sometimes made some questionable advances on the MC than the kind boy are not such a minority.
