speaking as an american, reading shuumatsu kimi to hits especially hard because it feels more realistic to me. post-2020 zombie media is different in a radical way because now we know how resistant people are to any threat of normalcy, how willingly people will risk themselves and others for the sake of the status quo. Of course the severity of this depends on the culture, but even in community-over-individual culture like japan there were people refusing to abide basic safety measures during the height of covid. and it was ESPECIALLY bad in the united states.
in early 2021 two elderly aunts of mine (in great health for their age, very sharp, living on their own with no issues) went on a road trip early 2021, caught covid, and died in the hospital days later. in 2022 my grandma caught covid in her retirement home (where no one, not even the staff, were masking in that facility whenever i visited, despite having signs up telling everyone to mask for the safety of the residents) and she rapidly declined mentally and physically, she went from being so healthy we thought she had years left to her dying in her sleep 3 months later. we had to beg her to wear masks and get vaccinated because she didnt trust doctors.
i was an essential employee and worked with the general public the entirety of the lockdown period, and onwards to today. i've been saying since 2020 that if a zombie apocalypse ever happens, even if it's a slow developing one, especially if it's a slow developing one, the usa is very likely fucked. how things are progressing in shuumatsu kimi to seems to be VERY heavily inspired by how many parts of the world handled the covid pandemic and it rings so fucking true to me, it's terrifying and one of the reasons i really like this manga. Okay damn sorry for the essay i was just talking about this on bluesky last night, i have THOUGHTS on this bro
dont get me wrong though i was still hoping for some kind of a happy ending but maybe they'll get to be zombies together 😭
