Okay, I'm ready for my first hypothesis. Her real lover is the king (who is shown as being near death) and the Tartians kidnapped and somehow amnesia-ed her before she could become known to the public. I haven't reconstructed the rest yet, though. This is not a spoiler, just me making guesses.
