Seems like what you can do at all is dictated by the class (Apprentice Paladin burns meat but actual food by cooking classed people is expensive). The herbs the receptionist showed hin didn’t even have the roots, likely meaning most gatherers don’t have a proper skill and it’s normal to just tear them off the earth.
The opposite should go for combat hence why they are surprised he could kill monsters.
There is the hiccup that MC has low stats, but he learned non-combat classes have a different system. I’m assuming either the system doesn’t apply to him (so his baby-tier stats don’t reflect his normal human strength) or he is under this different system. I would still bet in the former since he can cook, gather herbs and kill a goblin.
Essentially he is a jack of all trades even by their standards.
