Wouldn't surprise me that the source most likely used gender neutral terms and they just went with he instead of they for some reason.
Then again i have seen people complain when translators use They instead of He/She.
Witch is dumb because i have seen several manga's where 10 chapters in the translators had to say sorry it was the opposite gender after all.

Having said that in all fairness this does feel like someone MTL this and just checked grammar but didn't check context or just ignored context.

In page 21, there was a fragment written in Bahasa Indonesia, or a similar language, such as Tagalog or Bahasa Melayu, not sure, didn't read and can't speak nor read it anyway, and at least in Bahasa Indonesia, gender is contextual, although I'm not sure about the other ones, probably the same though, they are very similar.
