Feels like it's probably MTL. Japanese doesn't used a lot of pronouns to begin with and translating it means that there are often no clues inherent in the text to indicate gender. So it wouldn't surprise me that some translation tools default to gender neutral ones when they have no way to make a determination one way or the other.
