I was confused at first too lmao. I thought Fujita was just meming. Well, he still half-is because it's hilarious and amazing and I love it, but the actual *reason* is that 2020 is the 50th anniversary of Doraemon. This must have been the most appropriate time he decided to pay homage. Honestly, it couldn't have been timed more perfectly, because the mood whiplash made me literally laugh out loud lol

I think it has a bit to do with how they're drawn as well, Fujita is capable of drawing them the same as they were before just with eyes (seen in earlier chapters), this is usually when they're feeling spiteful. But in this chapter, for example when they're laughing, you can see that despite their mouths and eyes still being exaggerated, there's fewer wrinkles on their faces, and their eyebrows don't have that slight upturning that give them a scornful appearance.
