That may be true, but people don't
hear characters as such; and ordinary people do not refer to individual
letters as having
meaning except in some odd, technical cases, and the situation in this story didn't fit such a case. Ordinary people may, in the case of pictographic or ideographic languages refer to
characters as having meaning, but plainly the written language here was neither of those. She might have referred to
sounds, rather than specifically to phonemes or to syllables, but it still would be odd to refer to the meaning of a sound as such in the case of a language.
