Difference is, in this world it's totally normal for everyone to get murdered as soon as they go outside, where in our world there's a general law system in place that tends to make most people wary of just committing violent crime whenever they want.
There is no such thing in a world where people are strong enough to ignore any such law or consequence, only strength can match strength.
So why would anyone go to these auctions if they just get you robbed and murdered? Their reputation would be tainted for their generous buyers being beaten, robbed, or killed whenever they have an auction. Who. Would. Go. At least without a small army.

You forget something, in our world too there were brigans and pirates yet merchandise has crossed the world.

When you buy something you risk meeting thieves on your return routes, or on the transport of goods, because an object before arriving at the user/consumer is passed into the hands of many merchants.
it's not just big cities and port cities where customers are, very often the object continues its way into the countryside.
The lords are not everywhere and cannot guarantee security between cities and in villages.
Moreover in this case, it is more a city state than a city belonging to a country, so the way is free for all type of people.
It is surely several group of merchants gathered in a city between several kingdom/Empire, they took advantage of the location and the inhabitants enjoy the protection of these merchants and the city grew prosperous.
These merchants are essential for the surrounding countries, so no risk for the merchants and in any case the merchants together are surely strong enough to fight a country on their own, even several if they use diplomacy and their money in addition to their army
They came with small armies, the attackers had come to buy and had an army to bring back their purchase.
They did not have enough money, so their army is used to attack that of those who had the coveted objects.

Still, isn't the auction just a mediator between someone selling a valuable object and someone else buying it? Their responsibility starts in securing the object from the moment it's in their hands from the seller, until he receives its money and it goes to the buyer, safely. That's its job.
Providing a small army in a world that even looking at someone in the wrong way would cause your entire family to perish isn't feasible. Even more in an auction that could be selling hundred of itens a night. It just doesn't make sense in any way I try to think about it, sorry.

For normal every day people the sellers won't ever be responsible for taking care of your bought goods after they handed them over to you. You are responsible after you bought it even in a shop.

How would they have so much manpower? How much would that cost? They only take care of themselves. The auction house is not a charity organisation. And it is literally a dog eat dog world. If you don't have the power, connections to take care of yourself then you have no right to live independently in a world like that. And you if don't have what it takes to have expensive items with great power, then at best you can only loose them and be happy to be alive. You take care of yourself or die.
