@Doomer Problem is that the actual owner of the city is working with the influential corrupt merchant, and if the merchant dies mysteriously then they can blame it on the MC for failing in his duties and execute him to show they're in charge of the situation. Remember the MC is a Mayor, not a King.

As far as I remember, he IS the owner of the city, as the city lord. The landlord the merchant is colluding with is a noble unrelated to the current city, but he's wealthy and strong in military force. SO if they offended him, he could kill them before his actins are questioned in the first place. Either that or his neighbor is also his suzerain.

@HDMI1 what you said is both stupid and wrong. He’s the real city lord, he was made a noble and bought the city, it’s his. It doesn’t matter if the former owners are scheming, it’s still HIS. And like you said he’s not a king, and neither are they so he could easily act on this, he had enough proof after the attempt on his life.
