If I ever did that at like 12 to 14 years old (I think that's how old they are), It'd be met with suspicion. It's not even that my parents didn't trust me , It's just seems like a very odd request from a preteen.

Because the culture we grew up in does not promote happy marriages, especially not when in your prime. This is one reason anime and manga have become popular in the west (newer ones like this one have)
