In real-life Japan (or most SEA actually) that sort of closeness/"skinship" is normal for same-sex friends.

I had a friend who was transferred to China for a job. Being from California he thought his Chinese coworkers were fucking with him in a ha-ha San Fransisco way when they acted "extremely, extremely gay" with each other; either that or everyone in the company was in fact extremely homosexual. He had explained to him by a more experienced token white guy that no, that's just how things are around here. Cuddling with your bros is just how they do.

It is strange, I went to a religious hs near Seattle in 2000s. The guys were quite physical with each other just being friends like you discribe. It is interesting that in heavily heutronormative environments that same sex skinship is more normalized as there is no concern of sexual tension or misunderstanding.
It is a bit paradoxical. This period is the only time I saw others routinely naked as our gym class had post workout group showers.
