While I don't think the author meant to think too deep about this work, I find it funny that the obvious seeming plot hole of "throwing more money at a Zend to defend from a Zend than the amount of money the Zend would eat", can still kind of work as metaphor: Capitalists sell the remedies to the problems created through their exploitations and greed, thereby taking even more money out of society.
