"support us" popup shouldn't reset daily

while i agree that the support function needs visibility
making it reappear everyday as a popup, instead of keeping it forever as a button next to searchbar after you dismiss the popup is just an annoyance.
as such it just makes me want to just block the popup with adblockers (with the consequence of not even having a support button next to searchbar anymore)
i think resetting the popup daily is counterproductive.

While yes, I'm sure it can be fairly annoying, there are multiple ways around your issue:

A once-a-day annoyance is far better than one that pops up every page load
ok let's analyze the solutions

don't close the page
why should i keep my PC turned on 24/7 wasting power just to not get a popup
block the element
yes that's what i'm doing now but that's convenient for me but defeats the purpose of the button entirely right? a better compromise would be to keep it next to search bar forever so that it's non intrusive but still visible
just support bro
so are you implying that free users do not deserve a good experience?
A once-a-day annoyance is far better than one that pops up every page load
that's a false dichotomy, it could've as well been just a button next to search bar so that it's both visible and non intrusive

i have much respect for mangadex's anti-ad philosophy
Even tho its library is not as extensive as other sites, its ad free philosophy makes me comfortable with recommending it to other people. but if it's gonna turn to nagware behaviors then i'd rather tell ppl to use other sites (with better libraries) with an adblocker
if the purpose of showing it once a day is for visibility purposes, putting it in the space next to search bar would accomplish the same without troubling users, if the intent is to nag people to pay up, then that's a big letdown in my opinion.

I think you don't understand these sites Stonehopper,

The other manga sites you say which have a bigger library are illegal because they make money off of hosting offical rips and scanlated manga. These sites are a buisness.

Mangadex on other hand is not a buisness, it only hosts scanlated and not official rips of manga. That said mangadex is also illegal as even scanlated mangas are illegal. Now because it only hosts scanlated mangas it often goes under the radar of publishers or the publishers just don't care about scanlations, also mangadex does not make any profit off of users supporting it in fact they often have to use their own money to support the site.

Now lastly why do think a free user should have the same experience as a user who supports the site irrelevant of the whether the site is profit or non profit.

Also having a pop-up that shows up once daily is barely an annoyance, it definitely doesn't make using this website a bad experience as you say.

This is a common misconception. Mangadex is still very much an illegal pirate site (in most countries). The two things that set MD apart from most other aggregators is MD is not out to make a profit and it's stance on promoting legal content (i.e. not hosting currently licensed official rips, out linking, etc).

Now because it only hosts scanlated mangas it often goes under the radar of publishers or the publishers just don't care about scanlations
Publishers/licensors in the market are very aware of Mangadex. There are no shortages to take down demands.

Kind of this to be honest, but to elaborate on it a little more. Mangadex doesn't want to have to beg money but with the recent explosive growth (thanks to Google's search changes) more resources needed to be added to support the site.

So the problem is how to prompt users to donate in a way that is noticeable but not absolutely intrusive. So based on that and the fact that support question regularly come in asking how to do basic things in the site (like how to logout, change settings, "why do I see porn when I enabled porn!?!?!?"), nothing subtle like a small icon in the top bar was going to be enough. So for every user that finds that popup to be a site breaking degrading experience there is another user who still hasn't "seen" it. For most users it's probably only annoying as those cookie banners that a lot of sites have.

as @RogueKitsune already adressed the library stuff
lemme adress the popup/free tier user stuff

why do think a free user should have the same experience as a user who supports the site
i'm not claiming that, obviously a premium user should have perks, but nagware does not improve premium user experience, rather it just worsens free user experience. so unless the goal is to drive away free users then i don't see an excuse for nagware

it is my personal opinion that it does worsen the user experience by a noticeable amount just like cookie prompts, i understand the necessity to prompt users for donations, but as i suggested there are better ways to approach it, and (as a reply to @RogueKitsune ) if the concern are people that lack basic comprehension skills, then that does not justify locking the setting to premium only. i'd even accept a 3 choice setting: "resets daily (free user)" "always in navbar(free user)" "never show (premium user)"

i'd say that strikes a good balance between noobs, advanced user and premium user?

Tbh, that might not be a bad thing if it happens, since the biggest reason why the site resorted to this is because of a very large sudden increase in traffic (mostly due to Google Search changes), but it doesn't seem to be happening, in fact, users still seem to be increasing...

:haa:

But you can hope that once the new servers are finally set up
We will move to showing the support campaign banners on the site for a limited portion of time. This will vary based on how much is needed to stay roughly stable over time, as users come and go.
will come true.
