0 stakes. Incredibly boring. Might as well skip all the "minions/queen/host" bs and just run straight in.

A better version of this would be - Summon 1000 bugs being his ability and progressively he gets to summon more. (Not magical or anything or evolution. Naw)
I want this alt-story to be, “Enter his fucking orifices” and then a later evolution of the skill was to specialize into a certain bug, giving him more control over them. (Ants obviously) and being pulling horrors that would genuinely be funny. He has to progressively think hard on how he can utilize this disposable army of earth bugs.
”Flash bang” He summons a thousand light bugs, and make them swarm.
”DESTROY HIS EARS.” 1000 cicadas swarm.
”Gun.” Bombard beetles.

Later skill choices would be focusing on himself or on the bugs. Example.
(Self) Insect action - Choose an action of your specialized bug. This action will be magically enhaced and can be done by you. [This would give him some self combat when bugs are viable. Making him not as weak as a basic summoner type.]
(Bugs) Link - Link your senses and mind with your bugs to increase your control and command over them. [He would most likely only do this when he needs to scout and such. Eventually have to train to resist the feeling of when a linked bug dies. But this gives him a more finer control instead of being restricted to simple commands]

This is not for everyone. But also don't let the premise fool you.
Yes, its pretty much obviously a Solo Leveling copy on the surface, but it does grow into its own merits. Its fun! Sure, its got a lack of depth, the characters are your typical slop NPCs, but this is a very solid saturday morning cartoon joust through raising a bug army in a thinly veiled cultivation setting with a modern skin.
(My protip is to skip past any scene that has NPCs talking about planning what to do or flattering a character. Its all fluff and you can just scroll past. Also skip any status screens, a lot of them have unreadable text anyways because the group scanlating is cheap without good QC.)
