There are consequences, they just have to be reported. Do you think they will report themselves? Just because something is happening in a Manga doesn't mean it's solely a Japan problem or that they are ok with it. Domestic and child abuse isn't anything new in any part of the world.

this is why i said "much of the terrible crimes," no? cause IT'S NOT just child abuse, but apparently all sorts of bs (like the infamous groping on the trains) that goes unreported. and THAT makes it very much, "haha japan" cause i haven't heard about such a big variety of crimes that ppl just get away with anywhere else in the world.

I'm just going to leave this here but ... from what I understand Japanese people would rather keep the peace than to stand up and make a big stink in public spaces. Sure that is normal behavior to stand up for yourself in the west but from what I know they pride themselves on keeping public decorum. So no, having a shouting match in public is not looked on as normal there. This is even at the expense of knowing you are right just to keep the peace. But then again I've only heard about this and I'm NOT Japanese.

All that being said the mom is still a piece of shit. The whole family can get run over by truck-kun but NOT re-incarnate.
