An interesting take on the "Izekaya Food makes everyone happy" genre that is a dime a dozen these days. There are isekai Izekaya, tired office worker izekaya, high school romance with an izekaya setting... But this one is the most "Class consciousness gap moe" Izekaya I've seen. It's almost a reverse Food Wars, where she's dressing down instead of taking humble food and dressing it up.
The story is loudly criticizing the "fancy food is superior to common food" narrative. Snacks and beer supremacy, says the pretty lady. I like how she explicitly calls out her "ice queen" persona as an insincere performance that she feels social pressure to maintain. The very idea of Gourmet is a class division. But her career is dependent on maintaining the illusion of superiority, so she's trapped. Bitter!
My ex's family had a hobby of pretending they were Italian Gourmand chefs. They had a 8 burner gas stove that cost $6k. They'd make pasta sauce that took 12 hours. But they loved going to restaurants and complaining about the food. I never heard them enjoy a meal out. If hating food is what being a gourmet means to them, why do it?
There's another theme about sensuality. Food can be sensual, just like sex. A lot of cooking manga play this up. Here we also get the pretty girl eating the good food, so it's doubled up.
Last, because she's high-strung, it's also a "Bocchi the Izekaya!" type. Good fun. This is one of the standout cooking manga in an overcrowded field.
