quick wrapup on this entire anthology: it feels genuine. like there's something the author wants us to see or to feel with each story.
1st story wants readers to feel the boundaries of conformity. The scene where she encourages a younger child to be creative is especially bittersweet.
2nd story wants readers to feel the numbness of traditionally-awful things. The relationship with the mafia man and the vomiting show what can break through that numbness
3rd story wants readers to see the pressure to excel. The young, hopeful girl that just whitened her teeth and smiled so readily, struggles to break free from her emotional cage
For the 4th story, I'm not smart enough to summarize it. A quote that stuck out: "it's not that [she] was amazing, your vision of her was amazing"
not all of these themes are conveyed perfectly. but it felt real and it made me feel real things
