I guess in Japanese SM culture they don’t really use safe words, the onus is placed on the Dom to read their partner and to be knowledgeable, which is probably why the manga makes such a big point of emphasizing how well MC can read what she wants.

Tbh, I thought that too, since he doesn't have any experience.....but, by now, i realized it seems like Sawada is extremely good at reading Minezaki. Not only about what she wants, but also how to give it to her and when to stop.
These two need no safe word. They just know....

Kinda. The explanation's really just the simplest tldr way I could think of at the time but Japanese doesn't really do prefixes or suffixes like English. It's a lot more like smacking a bunch of words together to become a different word that's related to the components used. Ignore the part where half of Japanese isn't actually like that and instead where only one component dictates meaning and the other component is only used to dictate pronunciation, or all the components are completely unrelated to the meaning.

I think that he fits the Japanese "no safe word" style a bit more, because he was OBSESSIVELY meticulous and checking on Nana at every turn. Still, I dont know how the hell the Japanese do it without a safe word, seems insane to me.

I think there needs to be a distinction between genuine choking (breathplay) and just placing your hands loosely around the neck, which is honestly what most people do. The latter CAN be dangerous, but is typically not - it's just hand placement with no real pressure and it's often anchored around the neck, not the throat specifically. Breathplay involves actual pressure on the sides of the throat, cutting off blood flow, which some people enjoy as an "experience," but that shit's absurdly dangerous imo.
