I think they disbanded the party so he wouldn't have to split the xp, but it wouldn't let him rejoin due to the level difference. Since he didn't leave the party it won't say anything

You have to know about damage formulas and stuff. If the 400 ATK from the sword gets tripled by the buff, then good. If not, then consuming 200 levels in a boss fight is suicidal. How it works depends on the game; different games are different.
