John's "Rob Lucci" to Ritsu's "Zoro". That would be an interesting matchup

And this is why you have a backup plan for if your plan gets seen through or some miracle soldier appears.
And then you have a backup plan for your backup plan. Basically the more pessimistic you are, the more successful you'll be. Oh and make sure you have a backup plan for if your enemy figures you're a pessimist and have a plan for your backup plan's backup plan.

So MC's groups retarded plan backfired but then antagonist for this mini-arc also just made a retarded plan. If you know its a trap/feint then don't play into it just go back to the castle. God the author needs to actually think what strategists would do.

Also as a point John is shown to await the right moment to do what he must and yet here he's going against that very characteristic this very chapter setup......

They need to destroy the enemy nonetheless, so how would returning to the castle work? The correct way, if there is a way, is to inflict maximum damage to the opponent without springing the trap. Sometimes there's no way to attack the enemy anymore without getting caught in the trap, and then it would be the correct answer to withdraw. In this case, it does seem like they can do some damage, as long as they avoid following the retreating enemy too far. But then again, it also depends on if Ars has a backup plan, like he should.

It would be better if this wasn't even the real plan, just the public plan that was meant to leak to the enemy, and thus they were gleefully talking about it aloud, making sure all of their troops knew the retreat is for tactical reasons. That also made sure the enemy commander didn't see any panicking.

It's cause in the castle they have such an advantage defensively, this is why they were waiting in it. To assault a castle you need a 2:1 ratio at the minimum to siege it otherwise you'll lose.

I'm still unsure how Ars soldiers even managed to retreat as far as they did when the enemy has such a large and good cav units. I'm not expecting Sun Tzu level tactics in this series but when I've been hit over the head how impressive certain people are at tactics and/or intelligence I'm like "Hol up thats stupid".

Numbers can help you win, but it's hardy the defining factor in taking a castle. You can very much take it with less troops depending on tactics deployed. It's what you bring along with you that determines whether an assault on a castle wins or not. Their only reliable siege weapon is Charlotte and her magic, and if they run into the same problem like last time they 100% lost.

Their current strategy relies HEAVILY on the enemy being brain dead enough to fight head-on despite having a castle to hold up in AND that their enemy is in a race against time before the seasons change. Yet that's actually what we're seeing here. Why did it work until this new guy showed up despite some of these enemies having decent strategy stat? Because plot.
