I thought he was just his female version. And thats why Taiga recognized him inmediatly.

Now the start makes even less sense.

I mean the legend was that the hero and a "princess" would defeat the demon king, so this twist was already intended. I'm guessing it's just a coincidence that the princess character Azumi is playing looks like himself in our world.
